How much do Plantation Shutters cost?

Plantation shutters are stylish and practical. They’re contemporary and increasingly popular, adding value to your home. But what do plantation shutters cost?

How Much are Plantation Shutters?

There are a few factors that we consider when quoting shutters including:

  • the size and shape of your windows;
  • the application and shutter material (PVC vs timber), different blade types and sizes;
  • hinged shutters vs bi-fold sliding; and
  • complexity of installation.

Generally, our cost for plantation shutters is between $400-$500 per square metre including installation.

For example, for a standard window (1200x1200), a hinged PVC shutter might cost around $750.

If you’re quoted much less than this by a competitor, you should be worried about the quality or hidden costs like installation.

Estimating the cost of made-to-measure shutters is difficult! Our professional consultants have many years of experience and training to help you choose the best shutters for your home.

What Impacts the Cost of Plantation Shutters?

Size of your window: a plantation shutter for a simple standard window is less than a bay or corner window.

Number of windows: obviously, the more windows that you have or want covered, the more you should budget for plantation shutters.

Material Choice and design: standard hinged shutters are less expensive than sliding bi-fold shutters. Tall or wide windows may require supports or thicker shutter blades adding to cost.

Fitting: plantation shutters may be fitted inside the window recess, or around the edge of the window frame (face fit). This is usually your choice although face fit can be more costly as the shutter is larger.

What Type of Plantation Shutter is Best?

Most Premier Shades customers opt for PVC or basswood timber shutters. Both are excellent choices.

PVC is always recommended for bathrooms, laundries and other wet applications.

Basswood timber is strong, stable and light and can span large widths.

Plantation Shutters FAQ

What’s the warranty on plantation shutters? PVC plantation shutters have the longest warranty, up to 25 years structural and 10years on the paint. Our consultants will advise the warranty period based on your product choice.

Are shutters more expensive than blinds? Yes, although shutters tend to be more durable and long lasting than roller blinds and add value to your home.

Are plantation shutters blockout? Not entirely. Plantation shutters will blockout most of the light filtering through windows but they don’t provide complete darkness.

Are plantation shutters a good insulator? Yes, plantation shutters will help keep your home warm in winter, cool in summer.

What about aluminium shutters? Aluminium shutters are more expensive than timber or PVC and are more commonly used externally.

How long do shutters take to make? Imported high quality shutters take around 8-10 weeks from check-measure to installation. Australian made shutters take around 6 weeks and are generally a little more expensive.

Can I put plantation shutters over a sliding door? Yes, we recommend bi-fold or sliding panel shutters.

Can I put plantation shutters over louvre windows? Plantation shutters are trickier on louvre windows. Our consultants will check to see if there’s enough clearance for the glass louvres and lever mechanism.

Anything else? Yes, if you want your shutters installed for Xmas, imported shutters need to be ordered (and check-measured by us) by the middle the of October. Australian shutters need to be ordered by the beginning of November. Please contact us to confirm these dates.
