Are Plantation Shutters Blockout?
Well, the quick answer is no. No matter what you have been promised. They are room darkening, but if you need the complete dark look - "I sleep in a cave dark look !" then they are not the only product you need.
If you are a Shift Worker and need to sleep in complete darkness during the day, then you will need something else as well as the Plantation Shutters. You can add a thick curtain and a pelmet over the top of the plantation shutter for extra room darkening. An even better solution for complete darkness in your bedroom is to add an aluminium roller shutter to the OUTSIDE of the window. That way you are blocking light coming from outside of the bedroom (as well as street noise and heat/cold). We have an option where we motorise the roller shutter, so you can control the shutter from the comfort of your bed with a remote. In some cases, no sparky required!
Plantation Shutters are stylish, fantastic insulation and a window treatment that adds value to your home. However, they allow light bleed. Because of how they operate, light can bleed through the movable Shutter louvers as well as the edges where the shutter louvres join the shutter frame. During the night, it may not be as noticeable except for full moons and street lights!
What is great about having Plantation Shutters in your bedroom is the insulation. Shutters are in the top 2 for the most effective insulation on your window. (Along with thick curtains). During Summer you also have the ability to tilt them slightly whilst your window is open and allow a breeze into your bedroom. Plantation Shutters can control the light and privacy better than any product around, which is ideal in a bedroom. However, they are not a total blockout product.
We consider one of the most effective window furnishing BLOCKOUT blinds on the market is the INTERNAL ZIPTRAK. Click to learn more. Please remember, we are yet to create the "I sleep in a cave" blockout blind. Light bleed can also come from under doors, cracks in roofs etc.
